‘Super Smash Bros. Wii U’ Tops ‘Mario Kart 8’ As Fastest Selling Title On Console In U.S.

'Smash Bros.' sells 490,000 copies in U.S.

While the Wii U, Nintendo’s latest home console, has faced its numerous trials and tribulations since its launch a couple years back, it has since appeared to be on the mend since Mario Kart 8‘s launch earlier this year. Nintendo is finally turning a profit, and the Wii U’s sales are slowly rising to a respectable number. Just in time for the holiday season, Nintendo has also released their next juggernaut in the form of Super Smash Bros. Wii U the fifth entry in the Super Smash Bros. fighting game franchise that has spanned every home console generation since the Nintendo 64. With names like Mario, Zelda, Link, Pac-man, and Mega Man hitting the game, Nintendo was undoubtedly banking on the game doing well for the console. So how have the sales been? According to CNet, Super Smash Bros. Wii U is now the fastest selling game in the Wii U’s history.

During the three-day period of November 21-23, Nintendo sold 490,000 physical and digital units of Super Smash Bros. Wii U in the US, the company announced Tuesday. That makes it the fastest-selling Wii U game ever in the US market, knocking Mario Kart 8 off that perch.

It is also worth noting, however, that Nintendo has yet to reveal the worldwide sales of Super Smash Bros., though if the U.S. sales are any indication, they will likely have hit around 1.5 million or greater–though we won’t know until the actual numbers are shared. What does this mean for console sales for the Wii U? It’s hard to say. There is no information on the sales of the console in the same timeframe, and therefore, it is unclear if the release has only resulted in current Wii U owners purchasing the game. Though, regardless, these numbers are good news to Nintendo.

Nintendo of America’s marketing executive Scott Moffit said, according to Gamespot, that Nintendo’s holiday season is off to a great start, though they are quick to cut off any premature celebration. “There’s still a lot of work to do,” and Nintendo still has “a few more surprises in store for fans.”

Is Amiibo a part of big plan to push Nintendo forward, or is Moffit referring to a different surprise? Something they have yet to even announce? We’ll find out as the holiday season gets closer.
